I work with a high school conservation voluneer program at the Beardsley Zoo in Brideport, CT. We do summer trips and I was wondering if you have day (or afternoon) long volunteer opportunities for up to 10 students? If so, please email me any details about pottentially setting something up for this upcoming summer. We’d be happy to reciprocate by treating you to a tour/volunteer opportunity with our facility for yoru staff. Let me know your thoughts, I am just at the point of inquiries now. Shoot me an email. Thanks!!!

I just wanted to double check that the next volunteer orientation is on December 20th and 21st at noon.

We celebrated my son’s 12th birthday at the Center yesterday – it was wonderful!!

    • Katrina Bergman says:

Hi Pruett, That’s great! I am glad he had a good birthday party here and happy birthday to your 12 year old :). There is a volunteer orientation on Friday the 20th and Saturday the 21st at noon. Just give a call a day before at 781 682 4878 to make sure it is running. It should be, but good to double check because sometimes things come up that time of year. Thanks. Have a great day.

  3. Lauren says:

Hello, I’m interested in volunteering with the center. In the application, it asks which positions you’d prefer from the list of those available. Where can that list be found?

    • Katrina Bergman says:

Hi Lauren, We have a volunteer orientation the third Saturday of each month at 12 noon. Our volunteer coordinator, Steve Martin, will give you a list of what we need and you can see if it is something you are interested in. You can bring your application with you or fill it out here. Hope to see you soon. Have a great day! :)

  4. Deb says:

Hello – I am interested in volunteering opportunities for my 12 year old daughter. Do you have an age requirement for your volunteer program?

    • Katrina Bergman says:

Hi Deb, There is no age limit for volunteering but anyone under 17 has to have a parent within ear shot. We hold a volunteer orientation on the third Saturday of every month at 12. You can come and fill out an application then if you would like. Steve Martin is the volunteer coordinator and he can answer any questions you have. You can also call him at 781 682 4878 x126. Hope to see you soon! :)

  5. Kali says:

Hi I am filling out the application now and I am stuck at the part where you fill out the positions you would want, where do I find the list of them?

    • Katrina Bergman says:

Hi Kali, All of our prospective volunteers attend a volunteer training program which is held on the third Saturday of each month at 12 noon. Steve can let you know what jobs are available at that meeting. Thanks for your interest in the Center. Hope to see you soon! :)

  6. Lori says:

I am interested in volunteering – I have medical skills (human) and experience/training in doing surgical procedures on animals.
Do you have any need for someone like me?
Also, I have parrots at home. Is there a health danger for them…I wouldn’t want to bring home any odd bacteria or whatever and endanger them….
    Regards, Lori

      Hello, Lori

Thanks for the post! We can always use volunteer help, and would love for you to come check out our facility. The first step is filling out a volunteer application and going through our volunteer training program. You can find the application under the “volunteer” tab of our website and you can drop it off at our front desk any day between 10-4. At that time we can give you info about the next training session, and answer any other questions you might have. Thanks so much for your interest and we hope to see you soon!

    • Katrina Bergman says:

Hi Lori – We have a volunteer program but it doesn’t include work inside our hospital. There is a volunteer orientation the third Saturday of each month at 12 and you can fill out an application there. We do have student interns also – you can apply for an internship by downloading info on this website. We are full for this summer but also accept students all year round. Your parrots would not be in danger. Thanks so much for your being in touch!

HI I am a college student studyng Amimal Science and would love to volanteer this summer. When is the orientation date in May and do you perfer me to mail you my application or bring it on orientation?
    Thank You!

    • Katrina Bergman says:

Hi Caroline, There are two ways to volunteer – as a student intern or a ‘traditional’ volunteer. Please look at the internship application and summary, so you can determine which program you are interested in. Volunteer orientations are held on Saturdays. Please call the front desk to confirm the schedule for May. They will be posted on our calendar within the next few days too, as we update. If you are interested in an internship for this summer, please call Dr. Adamski to see if we are still accepting applications. Thanks so much for your interest in the Center. I look forward to meeting you! Best, Katrina

Hello. I am a student at umass amherst on a pre-vet track. I live in Ashland, MA and have worked in a dog and cat kennel for the past two years. At school I get daily hands-on experience with livestock animals. I would like to broadan my experience to include wildlife, something that fascinates me the most within the animal kingdom. I have heard off online sources that this wildlife center provides opportunities to intern. If this is true I am very interested in starting now over winter break. I understand this is not a paid internship but is also free of charge. I want to know more about the opportunity. What kind of schedule is to be followed? What kind of work would be done? Can I intern from home? I am currently filling out the volunteer form, but is there some kind of upcoming orientation I can attend or some kind of time that would be best suited for me to visit? I do live a little under an hour away and have a work schedule I need to follow so any information right now would be very helpful, however I can definitely find at least 4 hours a week, probably more, to come down. Please let me know. Thank you.

  17. I am interested in volunteering 2 Days a week 4 hours on Saturday and Wednesday I love all kinds of animals .

  18. Hello Zoe,

The Center gets volunteers of all ages throughout the week and weekend. We have a Grandmother/daughter team that comes in on Thursday afternoon and she is currently in middle school and a Father daughter team that comes in on Sundays, which she is also a high school student. The Center asks that all volunteers can commit to 4 hours a week, but if this is not feasible we will work with your schedule.

Come on down throughout the next few weeks, help carve some pumpkins and talk to other volunteers here about there experience.

    Hope to see you soon,

I’m a high school student interested in volunteering– what is the time commitment of a position? Is it manageable with a junior year schedule?
